Let’s take a moment to look back—way back—to the early 1900s, when the Hotel Stoddard stood as one of La Crosse’s finest landmarks. Opened in 1904, this grand hotel was the kind of place you’d book if you were someone important—or just wanted to feel that way for a night. With marble floors, elegant dining rooms, and all the modern conveniences of its time (including electric lights and telephones in every room), the Stoddard was a statement of pride for a growing river city.
It wasn’t just a place to sleep—it was where deals were made, stories were swapped, and weddings were celebrated. Located right in the heart of downtown, the Stoddard played host to traveling performers, politicians, and anyone passing through who wanted a taste of La Crosse at its most refined. More than a hotel, it was a cornerstone of community life—and a pretty stunning one at that.
