Though the Kellogg House no longer stands, its legacy lives on through the story of its builder, Mark H. Kellogg—a trailblazing telegrapher and journalist whose life bridged the early days of La Crosse and one of the most infamous battles in American history. Kellogg arrived in La Crosse in 1851 and quickly became a vital voice in the growing river town, serving as the city’s first press telegrapher, a newspaper editor, and even a local fireman.

He left La Crosse to cover the western frontier, ultimately losing his life alongside Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. Known for his ability to "make the paper talk," Kellogg was a bold and curious storyteller—an early example of the on-the-scene reporting we rely on today. His former home was a symbol of both personal ambition and the evolving identity of La Crosse itself.
